Why Use an MCS-Certified Heat Pump Installer? (And Why It Pays)

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the UK quality standard for renewable heating and generation installations. When you choose an MCS-certified installer, you are choosing a company whose work, competence and paperwork are independently assessed against a recognised standard.

It is the difference between a heat pump fitted to a proper design and commissioning standard, and one thrown in by someone learning on your home. For a five-figure, 20-year investment, that assurance matters.

This is the practical clincher: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant — £7,500 for eligible homes, or £9,000 off the mains-gas grid on applications from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027 — can only be claimed when the installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer.

You also receive an MCS certificate for your installation, which is important for the grant, for warranty purposes and if you ever sell your home.

Look for genuine MCS certification, membership of a consumer code like RECC, and evidence of real design competence — a company that insists on a full heat loss survey before quoting, talks about flow temperatures, and commissions to a water-quality standard.
