Are Heat Pumps Worth It in 2026? An Honest UK Verdict

For most UK homes in 2026, yes — a well-designed heat pump is worth it. After the grant the upfront cost is competitive with a premium boiler replacement, the running costs are usually lower, the unit lasts far longer, and your home is warmer and quieter.

But "worth it" depends entirely on design. A rushed, undersized or badly commissioned heat pump can disappoint. So the real question is not "are heat pumps worth it?" but "is a properly designed heat pump worth it?" — and there the answer is a confident yes.

A well-designed air source heat pump for an average home is typically around £14,500 before grants. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards any eligible home, bringing the net cost to roughly £7,000. Homes off the mains-gas grid can claim an enhanced £9,000 grant on applications from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, netting down to around £5,500.

With 0% VAT until 2027 and the grant deducted from your invoice by an MCS-certified installer, the real out-of-pocket figure is far lower than the sticker price suggests — and increasingly comparable to a high-end boiler and cylinder replacement.

A well-designed heat pump typically runs at around £800 to £1,100 a year, and as low as £350 to £720 with solar or a smart tariff. Compare that to £1,000–£1,800 for oil or £1,200–£2,000+ for LPG and the annual saving is real — and it repeats every single year.

A quality heat pump has an expected life of 20 years or more, against roughly 10 to 15 for a boiler — so over two decades a boiler household typically buys a second unit while the heat pump keeps going. That longevity is a big part of the lifetime value case.

Comfort matters too. A correctly designed heat pump runs at a low, steady flow temperature, giving even, gentle warmth all day rather than the hot-then-cold cycle of a boiler. Most people who switch describe their home as more comfortable, not less.
