What is the BUS Grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant that helps homeowners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives like air source heat pumps. It is administered by Ofgem and has been running since April 2022.

The grant covers a significant portion of the installation cost — you do not need to apply separately or deal with any paperwork. Your MCS-certified installer (that is us) applies on your behalf as part of the installation process.

How Much Can You Get?

Standard grant: £7,500 — Available to all eligible properties for an air source heat pump.

Enhanced grant: £9,000 — Available from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027 for properties that are off the gas grid. If your home currently uses oil, LPG, electric storage heaters, or another non-gas heating system, you qualify for this higher amount.

The grant is paid directly to the installer and deducted from your invoice. You never need to find the full amount upfront.

How the BUS grant cuts the price

Illustrative figures for a typical air source heat pump. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (up to £9,000 off-gas) and 0% VAT bring the real cost right down — we deduct the grant from your bill.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for the BUS grant, you need to meet these criteria:

  • Property type: You must own the property (owner-occupiers and private landlords qualify; social housing does not).
  • Existing heating: You must be replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system (gas boiler, oil boiler, LPG boiler, coal, or electric storage heaters).
  • EPC: Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate. If you do not have one, we can arrange it.
  • Installation: Must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer (Greenmotion is MCS-certified).
  • New build: New-build properties do not qualify.

There is no income threshold — the BUS grant is available regardless of your household income.

How the Application Process Works

When you choose Greenmotion, the process is simple:

1

Free online estimate

Start with a free, no-obligation online estimate so you can see your likely cost and savings before committing to anything.

3

We apply to Ofgem

Once you accept, we submit the BUS voucher application on your behalf and Ofgem issue a voucher (typically within 2–4 weeks).

4

We install your heat pump

Our own MCS-certified engineers complete the installation.

5

We redeem the grant

We redeem the voucher and deduct it straight from your bill, so you pay only the net amount: no upfront grant paperwork, no waiting for reimbursement.

How Long Will the BUS Grant Last?

The scheme is currently funded until March 2028. However, grant amounts and eligibility criteria can change, and uptake has been increasing. We strongly recommend applying sooner rather than later to lock in the current grant levels.

The enhanced £9,000 grant for off-gas properties is specifically time-limited to 21 July 2026 – 31 March 2027.

Am I Eligible? The 2026 Rules in Plain English

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is generous but has clear eligibility rules. Here is exactly who qualifies in 2026, in plain English.

  • Property: must be in England or Wales with a valid EPC. The old rule requiring you to fix any loft or cavity insulation recommendations first was removed in 2026 — insulation is strongly advised for performance but no longer a barrier to the grant.
  • Existing heating: you must be replacing a fossil-fuel system — gas, oil, LPG or electric storage heaters all qualify. You cannot claim to replace an existing heat pump.
  • Grant amount: £7,500 towards an air source heat pump as standard. From 21 July 2026, homes that are genuinely off the gas grid can claim the enhanced £9,000 grant, with applications running to 31 March 2027.
  • How it is paid: the grant is deducted from your quote at source — you never pay it and reclaim it. As an MCS-certified installer we make the application on your behalf, so there is no paperwork for you.
  • Stacks with: 0% VAT (until 2027) and any solar or battery you install at the same time. The scheme is funded through to March 2028.

If you are off-gas and currently on oil, LPG or storage heaters, the combination of the £9,000 grant, 0% VAT and much lower running costs is the strongest financial case for a heat pump anywhere in the UK right now.

Frequently asked questions

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for eligible homes. Off-gas-grid homes can claim an enhanced £9,000 for applications between 21 July 2026 and 31 March 2027.

Homes off the mains-gas network (heating with oil, LPG or electric) in England and Wales, replacing a fossil-fuel system, with a valid EPC and an MCS-certified installation. The old requirement to act on insulation recommendations first was removed in 2026, widening eligibility.

The BUS grant cannot be stacked with other government heat pump grants on the same measure, but ECO4 (which closes 31 December 2026) may fund insulation separately. We check every scheme you qualify for during the survey.

We apply to Ofgem on your behalf once you accept your quote, and vouchers are typically issued within 2–4 weeks. The grant is deducted straight from your invoice, so you never pay the full amount upfront.
