What is the BUS Grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant that helps homeowners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives like air source heat pumps. It is administered by Ofgem and has been running since April 2022.
The grant covers a significant portion of the installation cost — you do not need to apply separately or deal with any paperwork. Your MCS-certified installer (that is us) applies on your behalf as part of the installation process.
How Much Can You Get?
Standard grant: £7,500 — Available to all eligible properties for an air source heat pump.
Enhanced grant: £9,000 — Available from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027 for properties that are off the gas grid. If your home currently uses oil, LPG, electric storage heaters, or another non-gas heating system, you qualify for this higher amount.
The grant is paid directly to the installer and deducted from your invoice. You never need to find the full amount upfront.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the BUS grant, you need to meet these criteria:
• Property type: You must own the property (owner-occupiers and private landlords qualify; social housing does not). • Existing heating: You must be replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system (gas boiler, oil boiler, LPG boiler, coal, or electric storage heaters). • EPC: Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate. If you do not have one, we can arrange it. • Installation: Must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer (Greenmotion is MCS-certified). • New build: New-build properties do not qualify.
There is no income threshold — the BUS grant is available regardless of your household income.
How the Application Process Works
When you choose Greenmotion, the process is simple:
1. We carry out a free home survey and provide a fixed-price quote. 2. Once you accept, we submit the BUS voucher application to Ofgem. 3. Ofgem issue a voucher (typically within 2–4 weeks). 4. We install your heat pump. 5. We redeem the voucher and deduct it from your bill.
You pay only the net amount after the grant — no upfront grant paperwork, no waiting for reimbursement.
How Long Will the BUS Grant Last?
The scheme is currently funded until March 2028. However, grant amounts and eligibility criteria can change, and uptake has been increasing. We strongly recommend applying sooner rather than later to lock in the current grant levels.
The enhanced £9,000 grant for off-gas properties is specifically time-limited to 21 July 2026 – 31 March 2027.
