Quick Wins (Under £500)
Smart thermostat (£150–£250 installed): A smart thermostat like Hive, Nest, or tado° can save 10–15% on heating bills by learning your schedule and heating only when needed. If you have a heat pump, weather compensation does this job even better.
LED lighting (£50–£150): If you still have halogen or CFL bulbs, switching to LED cuts lighting costs by up to 80%. A typical home saves £40–£60/year.
Draught-proofing (£100–£300): Sealing gaps around doors, windows, letterboxes, and chimneys is one of the most cost-effective energy improvements. You can DIY most of it.
Hot water cylinder jacket (£15–£25): If your cylinder is uninsulated, a jacket saves £30–50/year. A no-brainer.
Medium Investments (£500–£5,000)
Loft insulation top-up (£300–£600): Building regulations now recommend 270 mm of loft insulation. If yours is less, topping it up is one of the best investments you can make.
Cavity wall insulation (£500–£1,500): If your home has unfilled cavity walls (built after 1920, before 2000), filling them saves £150–£300/year.
Double/triple glazing (£3,000–£8,000): If you still have single glazing, upgrading makes a significant difference. If you already have double glazing, the savings from triple glazing are more modest.
Long-Term Investments (£5,000+)
Solar panels (£4,500–£14,000): Generate your own electricity and slash your bills by 50–70%. With 0% VAT, the payback period is 6–8 years.
Air source heat pump (£4,500–£8,000 after BUS grant): Replace your gas boiler with a system that costs less to run and qualifies for £7,500–£9,000 in grants.
Solar + heat pump + battery (£10,000–£20,000 after grant): The ultimate combination. Near-zero energy bills, energy independence, and future-proofing against price rises.
The Order Matters
We always recommend “fabric first”: improve your insulation before investing in generation. A well-insulated home needs a smaller (cheaper) heat pump and fewer solar panels to meet the same demand.
