Why Insulation and Heat Pumps Go Together

A heat pump is sized to your home’s heat loss — how quickly warmth escapes on a cold day. Reduce that heat loss and you can fit a smaller, cheaper heat pump that runs at lower flow temperatures, which pushes efficiency (SCOP) up and running costs down.

The improvements that matter most, in rough order of value:

  • Loft insulation — cheap, high impact, easy to top up to 270mm.
  • Draught-proofing — low cost, immediate comfort gain.
  • Cavity wall insulation — strong return where walls are suitable.
  • Floor and pipe insulation — useful marginal gains.
  • Glazing — helps, but rarely cost-effective purely for heating savings.

Grants That Help Pay for Insulation

Insulation does not have to come out of the same budget as your heat pump:

  • ECO4 provides funded insulation and heating measures for eligible lower-income households — but note the scheme is due to close on 31 December 2026, so act early if you may qualify.
  • Warm Homes: Local Grant can fund insulation alongside low-carbon heating for eligible households (typically lower income or EPC D–G), up to £15,000.
  • Great British Insulation Scheme targets less-efficient homes for single measures like cavity or loft insulation.

Which Measures Matter Most — and What They Cost

You do not need a perfectly insulated home for a heat pump, but sensible fabric improvements lower your heat loss, let us fit a smaller unit, and cut running costs for the next 20 years. Prioritise by impact per pound.

  • Loft insulation to 270mm: the best value measure by far — typically £300–£700, saving £50–£150 a year, and grants are often available.
  • Draught-proofing: cheap (£100–£300) and immediate comfort gain.
  • Cavity wall insulation: £500–£1,500 where walls are suitable, with a strong return.
  • Floor insulation and better glazing: higher cost, worthwhile during other renovation work.
  • Solid-wall (internal or external) insulation: the biggest job and cost — valuable for older homes but not usually a prerequisite.

Crucially, the old rule that forced you to complete loft and cavity insulation before claiming the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant was removed in 2026 — insulation is strongly recommended for performance, but no longer a barrier to getting your heat pump grant.
