LPG vs Heat Pump: The 2026 Cost Comparison for Off-Grid Homes

If your home runs on LPG, you are heating with one of the most expensive fuels in Britain — and that makes the switch to a heat pump more compelling for you than for almost anyone else. LPG typically costs more per unit of heat than mains gas or heating oil, so the running-cost saving from a well-designed heat pump is larger, and you also qualify for the enhanced off-grid grant.

A like-for-like LPG boiler replacement typically costs between £2,500 and £4,000 fitted. If your LPG tank is leased you may avoid a tank cost, but you remain tied to a supplier and their pricing.

A well-designed air source heat pump for an average off-grid home is typically around £14,500 before grants — covering the heat pump, a correctly sized hot water cylinder, any radiator upgrades, electrical work and commissioning. On the sticker price the boiler looks cheaper, but the grant changes the comparison entirely.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for any eligible home. From 21 July 2026, homes off the mains-gas grid — including those heated by LPG — can claim an enhanced £9,000 grant, with applications open until 31 March 2027.

Apply £9,000 to a £14,500 installation and the net cost falls to around £5,500. A quality air source heat pump has an expected life of 20 years or more, against roughly 10 to 15 years for an LPG boiler. Over two decades an LPG household is likely to buy a second boiler while the heat pump keeps running.
