There Is No Universal “Free Solar” Grant
Let us be straight, because there is a lot of misleading advertising: in 2026 there is no blanket government grant that gives every household free solar panels. Support is real but targeted — aimed at lower-income households — alongside universal incentives that reduce cost and pay you for exported power.
Anyone cold-calling about “free government solar” or charging an upfront fee to “apply for your grant” should be treated with caution.
Targeted Grants for Eligible Households
- ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation): fully funded energy-efficiency measures — which can include solar — for households on means-tested benefits in properties rated EPC D–G. ECO4 is scheduled to close on 31 December 2026.
- Warm Homes Plan: the successor framework launched in 2026, offering a mix of local grants and 0%-interest loans (up to £30,000) for energy upgrades, aimed at lower-income households.
- Warm Homes: Local Grant: administered by local authorities — up to £15,000 for insulation and solar, plus up to £15,000 for low-carbon heating, for eligible households.
Universal Incentives Everyone Can Use
- 0% VAT: residential solar, battery storage and heat pump installations are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 — applied automatically by the installer, typically saving £1,000–£2,000.
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): not a grant but an income stream — large suppliers must pay you for surplus electricity you export. Rates in 2026 range from around 5p up to about 32p per kWh depending on supplier and tariff. You need an MCS-certified installation and a smart meter to qualify.

Scotland and Wales Have Extra Routes
- Scotland: Home Energy Scotland offers grants up to £7,500 and interest-free loans up to £17,500 for renewable measures — more generous than the rest of the UK.
- Wales: the Warm Homes Programme (including Nest) supports energy-efficiency and renewable measures for low-income households.

This is not red tape for its own sake — it is your guarantee of a properly designed, standards-compliant system, and it is what keeps your funding and export income valid.

Every Solar Incentive Available in 2026, Compared
There is no single “solar grant” in 2026 — there is a stack of incentives, and knowing which apply to you matters. Here is the honest picture.
- 0% VAT: the big one for most people — solar panels and batteries are zero-rated until 31 March 2027, saving 20% on the whole install automatically.
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): licensed suppliers pay you for exported electricity, typically 3–15p/kWh — an ongoing earner rather than an upfront grant.
- ECO4: for lower-income and vulnerable households, this can fund solar and insulation; it runs to 31 December 2026.
- Warm Homes: Local Grant: council-administered support of up to £15,000 for eligible low-income or low-EPC homes, which can cover solar alongside other measures.
There is no restriction on combining solar with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant — many customers do both at once for a single-visit, whole-home upgrade. If you do not qualify for the income-based schemes, the 0% VAT plus SEG payments plus self-use savings still make solar a strong 7–10 year payback on their own.
