Both systems need an annual service of broadly similar cost, but the heat pump removes the hassle unique to oil: no tank to monitor, no deliveries to schedule, no risk of running dry in a cold snap, and no smell of oil.
There is a carbon dividend too. Switching from oil to a well-designed heat pump can cut your home's heating emissions by up to around 80%, and that figure only improves as the electricity grid continues to decarbonise. An oil boiler can never get cleaner than the day it was fitted.
