Both technologies move heat rather than burn fuel, but they draw it from different places. An air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat from outside air using an outdoor unit. A ground source heat pump (GSHP) extracts heat from the ground through buried pipework — either long trenches or deep boreholes.

This is where they really diverge:

  • Air source: lower upfront cost, needs about 1m² of outdoor space, installed in a few days with minimal disruption.
  • Ground source: significantly higher upfront cost because of groundworks — trenches need a fair amount of garden, boreholes need drilling access — and installation is more involved.

For most homes the extra capital cost of ground source takes a long time to pay back through the modest efficiency gain, which is why air source dominates UK installations.

Grants Apply to Both

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards either an air source or a ground source heat pump. Off the mains-gas grid, the enhanced £9,000 grant (21 July 2026 – 31 March 2027) also applies to both. Both attract 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

So grants are rarely the deciding factor — the decision comes down to your space, budget and appetite for groundworks.

  • Efficiency: ground source edges it, with a slightly higher and more stable SCOP because ground temperature barely changes through winter. In practice a well-designed air source system still achieves an excellent SCOP of 3.5–4.
  • Space and disruption: air source needs ~1m² outside and a day or two to fit. Ground source needs either a large garden for trenches or drilled boreholes — significant disruption and cost.
  • Best fit: ground source suits large rural properties with land and high heat demand where the long-term efficiency justifies the outlay.
