Heat Pump Servicing & Maintenance: What It Costs and Why It Matters

One of the quiet advantages of a heat pump is how little it asks of you. There is no combustion, no flue, no gas — so there is far less to go wrong than with a boiler. But like any heating system, an annual service keeps it running at peak efficiency and protects your warranty.

An annual heat pump service typically costs broadly in line with a boiler service — usually somewhere in the region of £150 to £250 a year depending on the system and provider. Set against a heat pump's low running costs and 20-year-plus lifespan, it is a modest, predictable outlay.

Many manufacturers require evidence of annual servicing to keep their longer warranties valid, so it is worth budgeting for from the start.

A proper annual service checks the refrigerant circuit and pressures, inspects electrical connections, tests the controls and safety devices, confirms the system is still hitting its design flow temperatures, checks the water quality and system pressure, and cleans the outdoor unit's coil and clears the surrounding area.

The aim is to catch small issues early and confirm the system is still running as efficiently as the day it was commissioned.

Between services, a few easy habits help. Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and garden debris so air flows freely. Do not build sheds, fencing or planting tight around it. Keep an eye on system pressure and flag anything unusual — odd noises, error codes or a drop in performance — rather than ignoring it.

None of this is onerous, and it keeps efficiency high.

For that fee, a competent engineer will check refrigerant performance against the original design, clean the outdoor coil and clear airflow, test the antifreeze concentration, inspect the cylinder and expansion vessel, and review the controls, weather-compensation curve and any error logs. Two practical points owners often miss. Second, you can do the simple upkeep yourself between visits: keep leaves, snow and plants clear of the unit, and check the condensate drain is not blocked in freezing weather.
