Do Heat Pumps Work in Old Houses? Victorian, 1930s & Solid-Wall Homes

Heat pumps absolutely work in older and period UK homes — when they are designed properly. Here is what actually matters for Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and solid-wall properties.

The Short Answer: Yes — With Good Design

The technology is not the deciding factor — the design is. An older home simply has a higher heat demand, which means the system must be sized and set up correctly. Get that right and the age of the house becomes almost irrelevant.

Why Older Homes Are Different

Period and solid-wall homes lose heat faster than a modern build, so they need more heat delivered on a cold day. That affects three things: the size of the heat pump, the size of some radiators, and the flow temperature the system is designed around.

A cheap, rushed install ignores this and either undersizes the system (leaving you cold) or runs it too hot (killing efficiency). A proper design accounts for it from the start — which is exactly why we never quote without a full heat loss survey.

The Heat Loss Survey Does the Heavy Lifting

For an older home, a room-by-room heat loss calculation is non-negotiable. It measures how much heat each room actually loses — accounting for solid walls, single or older double glazing, floors and draughts — and tells us precisely which emitters need upsizing and how to keep flow temperatures low.

This is the difference between a heat pump that quietly keeps a Victorian house at a steady, even warmth and one that struggles. It is measurement, not guesswork.

Radiators, Not a Whole Rip-Out

Because we design for lower flow temperatures, many existing radiators can stay. The survey identifies the handful of rooms — often the coldest, largest ones — that benefit from a larger emitter. It is targeted, not a blanket replacement.

Where fabric improvements like loft insulation or draught-proofing make sense, we will say so honestly and build it into the plan, because a smaller heat demand means a smaller, cheaper-to-run system.

Grants Apply to Older Homes Too

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for eligible homes, and off-gas-grid properties (oil, LPG or electric) can claim an enhanced £9,000 grant on applications from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Crucially, the 2026 rules removed the old requirement to act on insulation recommendations first — which makes far more older, harder-to-treat homes eligible than before.
